What Is The Endocannabinoid System?

What Is The Endocannabinoid System?

For many people, cannabis products provide incredible relief from symptoms of Parkinson's, rheumatoid arthritis, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and sleep disorders more effectively than FDA approved drugs.

And yet, cannabis carries a long held stigma that is ironic for several reasons.

It’s astonishing that cannabis is often cast as a “drug”, as opposed to a “medicine”. The human body naturally produces cannabinoids, while pharmaceuticals are synthesized in labs.

Even if you have never consumed a cannabis product, cannabinoids have existed inside you since birth, working to heal and protect your cells every single day.

This is because our bodies possess the same wisdom, power, and magic of the natural world. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids that naturally occur in the human body; phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids found in nature.

‘Endo’: derived within the body.

‘Phyto’: derived from plants.

Phytocannabinoids And Endocannabinoids

Your endocannabinoid system is made of endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Cannabinoids are like keys and cannabinoid receptors are like locks; when cannabinoids fit into receptors, they unlock pathways that modulate almost every bodily function, including mood, immunity, sleep, appetite, and pain signaling. Endocannabinoids literally “unlock” optimal health. The greater their presence, the greater their ability to help your cells repair, rejuvenate, and flourish.

However, endocannabinoids are constantly metabolized by enzymes, which means your body naturally digests and uses them up. Furthermore, some people have naturally low levels of endocannabinoids, which is related to a number of health challenges.

For instance, some people struggle with low levels of anandamide (AEA), a primary endocannabinoid often referred to as the “bliss” endocannabinoid. AEA is naturally produced by the body in its stress response and activation of reward pathways. Studies have shown that patients with chronic pain and inflammation, including people with migraines, fibromyalgia, depression, PTSD, ADHD, weight gain, and irritable bowel syndrome, have lower levels of anandamide.

This is why supplementing with phytocannabinoids, cannabidiol (CBD), can be a gamechanger. CBD can enhance the presence of anandamide to induce relaxation, reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and regulate feelings of satiety and hunger. CBD can do all this without getting you high, because it is non-psychoactive.

CBD maximizes your body’s existing endocannabinoids by naturally inhibiting their enzymatic breakdown. Internally, both endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids are received by the same receptors (CB1 and CB2) and metabolized by the same enzymes of your body.

CB1 receptors are mostly in the central nervous system and they “outnumber many of the other receptor types on the brain”. CB2 receptors are found in the immune system, where CBD can enhance endocannabinoids to reduce inflammation and inflammatory pain.

Unlocking Natural Wellness From Within

Your body needs optimal levels of endocannabinoids to thrive. Your body relies on its endocannabinoid system for neuroprotection, immunity, and cellular resilience to combat environmental damage, stress, inflammation, and health challenges that deplete your endocannabinoid levels. Moreover, many of us produce lower than optimal levels of endocannabinoids, striking imbalances in the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an ancient plant medicine that has been used in time-honored therapies and treatments around the world.

By boosting the abilities of endocannabinoids, CBD is an all-natural plant therapy that empowers those on a mission to harness the power that already exists within their own body.

Clinical trials continue to explore how CBD unlocks wellness and relief in managing autoimmune diseases, degenerative nerve diseases, and chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and Alzheimer's disease.
